Luckily, FreeType 2 support is just about criminally easy to implement with
a 32bit imaging backend such as Imlib2. The current gdttf implementation
is.. uh.. unelegant, mostly because antialiased text (even the two-bit
variety in PHP) is difficult to render in a paletted 8bit system.
FreeType 2, in contrast to the older FreeType versions, provides
ready-to-use 8bit, 256-shade, antialiased bitmaps. In an ARGB system, this
information can be dumped directly onto the Alpha channel to get the desired
functionality.
