takes me a little further, but now I'm getting:
# apachectl start
Syntax error on line 238 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so into server: ld.so.1: /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so: symbol __udivdi3: referenced symbol not found
PHP is configured with --enable-libgcc
./configure --with-libgcc --with-gd --with-mysql=/opt/software/mysql --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --enable-track-vars --with-regex=system
