I agree with Zeev... the fact that some people don't like IDEs doesn't mean
they are useless...
I would take an extensible editor (i.e. emacs or to a certain level
UltraEdit) over a poor IDE anytime... but that's because I know how to
extend the editor to fit my tastes and needs... But most users have
absolutely no clue on how to define syntax coloring in UltraEdit, and they
can benefit a lot from the special functions in an IDE... as poor as it
might be.
That said, nothing can beat an IDE that doesn't suck... Specially if you can
extend it, or at least configure its settings.
You don't like autocomplete? turn it off... some people find it useful.
You consider syntax coloring "eye candy"? turn it off... I love to be able
to see when a string is not closed because all my lines are colored as a
string... And I love to be able to diferentiate variable names by something
else than a $ at the beggining.
Code folding confuses you? Don't fold your code.
Function and variable lists waste your time? Don't open those windows...
Are you turning off all the options and closing all additional windows? then
do "rm -rf phpide" (I supose you are in unix) and stick to "vi"

Sebastian
