The ^ character is an alternative character with the same
meaning as | (pipeline) in traditional Unix shells, that
is the original sh and deriviatives of that. It has never
been documented, but it is there. Therefore, the ^ must be
backslashed in order to protect it from evaluation.
The ^ is not special in bash, as the special properties of
^ are not widely known and have not been officially documented.
