Joey,
Just for arguments sake, let's say GD is moved out of the PHP distribution
and converted into a PEAR package. This package will have a version, and
access to that information is all you need. The question is of course how
many of the currently bundled extensions that should be "de-bundled" like
this. IMHO, there is an increasing number that should be.
