Try PHP 4.0.4 as this should be fixed in it.

Do you use trans-sid feature? Does the problem happen
without this feature?

After uprading to PHP4.0.3pl1 we had some strange problems with our client-side Javascripts.
Something (we assume PHP)began quoting Javascript Objects:
the original js-source: var d=document;
became: var d="document;"
With older versions of PHP we had no problems (using the same source files of course).
Changing from inline Javascript to external Javascript with
<script Language="Javascript" src="somefile.js"
type="text/Javascript"> solved the problem.
