Have a look at:

It connects to the news.netimages.com nntp server and fetches the last 25
messages in the php3.general group which is the last 25 messages posted to
the php3 mailing list.
The same script would work equally well for POP3 and IMAP servers without
any modifications other than specifying either imap or pop3 and a valid
mailbox name in imap_open().
