IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. Whether the actual
protocol behind these function is IMAP, POP or NNTP, we are still dealing
with messages and as such the functions are properly named. If you read
RFC 2060 it is quite apparent that IMAP is intended to be a cross-protocol
abstraction layer as well as a protocol in itself. Sort of like a
player-coach of message access protocols. Ok, that is a bad analogy but I
couldn't think of anything else.
In addition to IMAP, POP and NNTP, you can also point these functions at a
local mailspool file and there is some magic mushroom code behind the
scenes that figures out what format that mailspool file is in and reads it
correctly using these same functions.
