Very large array

I have a program that uses a very large array. The array is created by
reading ~50.000 rows from the database with ~20 columns. This consumes
around 250MB ram which is not a problem. The problem is that it takes 4 min
to unset the array either explicitly or when program ends. Is this normal on
an IBM Netfinity 2x933 Mhz with 1G ram?
