Just to make it clear, I do *NOT* think that the rules you suggested should be employed by PHP itself. It's no coincidence I'm talking about 4.1.0 and Please explain why. You haven't given any positive input to this discussion, only opposed everything suggested.
Ok, but be warned that I don't plan to participate in any fallout-discussion (mental strength at 100% drain): - I see no reason to change the way PHP is versioned. It worked, it works, and it can go on working. It's also consistent with the way virtually all other major opensource projects version their releases. - I see no inherent reason why PHP's version numbers should be identical to PECL/extension version numbers. For small-scale components, using a faster-running version number scheme is customary, and I'm fine with that. - Contrary to popular belief, I don't think anything magical has to happen for a 2nd digit change, but, it should be used with care, to attract people attention to a major change. I think I was the first one to suggest a 2nd digit change for something which is technically a couple of bytes of changed code (default change for register_globals), and I think that the 2nd digit can and should be used for stuff like that. Changing the module structure in a downwards incompatible way is also a good example for a 2nd digit change. Adding some functionality or improving some feature is not. Summary - I like your versioning scheme for the components (be them extensions or PECL components), but I don't like it for PHP itself. Zeev
