right. i think that moving extensions out of the core will make things
easier on both ends -- new releases of the core can go out without
having to wait on lesser-used extensions to be tested (or go out with
buggy lesser-used extensions), and new releases of those extensions can
be made on their own schedule. someone fixed a major bug in
pear/PECL/cybermut? run the regression tests and do a release. no more
waiting three months for a release of the core to be put together.
look at the current situation with the mnogosearch extension -- 4.1.0
and 4.1.1 don't support the latest mnogosearch api. it will probably be
at least three months before a distribution of php that does is
released. if mnogosearch were a part of PECL, a new version could be
released and usable with the existing core distribution whenever its
developers thought it was ready.
