bram@guts.nl raised a question in private correspondence about if it's
legimate for us to offer an interface to GD 1.5's facility for generating
LZW-compressed GIFs.
Here's my take on the issue:
The Unisys patents refer to a specific algorithm used to compress GIF files.
This algorithm will never, ever be included in PHP3. We can, however, (and
plan to) offer interfaces to such code -- without expecting any hassles.
It is up to the user to make sure that his LZW code is properly licensed from
Unisys or otherwise doesn't interfere with the patent.
I don't know what the legal standpoint is for actually *distributing* the
LZW code -- luckily, in the case of GD at least, we can leave that issue
to boutell.com. (Any comments on your behalf, Tom?)
