I think this has been clarified enough times, don't you think? We clearly do not have any say over what people who do not use our code call their work. "PHP" is not trademarked as a global trademark costs a hell of a lot of money and as such people can basically do whatever they want if they are not using our code. However, if they are using our code, as in taking PHP code, under the PHP license and modifying it, adding to it, etc, then they can not call this product PHP. For the very simple reason that we don't want someone to suddenly release PHP 5.0 or PHP Enterprise or any such crap that is just going to confuse the hell out of everyone. It is exactly the same restriction you see with Apache and why the various Apache variants out there are not called Apache. People should establish their own brand. If there is PHP licensed code in phpMyAdmin or PHP OpenTracker, then yes, they are forms of derived software. If they are simply written in PHP, then obviously not. Why is this so hard to understand? My personal preference is that people don't put "PHP" in the names of even non-derived stuff because I think it also adds to the confusion, and at a more basic level I don't think the implementation language should be part of a package name. Why aren't these things simply called OpenTracker and MyAdmin? What is the reason fot tacking PHP onto these names? You don't see stuff like, C Linux, C++ Gnome, C++ KDE, Perl Majordomo, Python Mailman, etc. -Rasmus On Tue, 6 Aug 2002, Sebastian Bergmann wrote: > derick@php.net wrote: > > Are phpMyAdmin and PHP OpenTracker forms of derived software? > > I'd like to know that, too ;) > > -- > Sebastian Bergmann > http://sebastian-bergmann.de/ > http://phpOpenTracker.de/ > > Did I help you?
