We've recently started to switch from $HTTP_*_VARS to the new
superglobals. We also have some old code which needs register globals to
be on. This has given us quite a headache in regards to sessions;
currently, it seems that with register globals turned on,
unset($_SESSION['varname']) won't work. So we need to use
session_unregister(), but then what happens when we finally have all our
code updated and are ready to turn register globals off... We'll be
forced to go through all our code changing session_unregister('varname')
to unset($_SESSION['varname']).
Needless to say, this makes migrating rather hard...
Also see my notes here

I would strongly suggest making unset($_SESSION['varname']) work with
register globals on.
