It is hard to accept because the function has always done exactly this and
it has always been documented to do exactly this. And I still have yet to
hear a good argument for changing this behaviour.

No it doesn't, it spews a warning. Which means BC is about to break. If
there is no intention to break BC, then remove the warning.
