Extensions to PHP

All, I wish to create my own function calls that can be used inside PHP. The purpose is to tie in some existing C-code that the company uses to do certain site specific things... Well, I need to know how to tie in my "modules" or "extensions". I'm guessing that I'd do it like every other set of functions that are compiled in...the question is, where should I start? Is there a web page, FAQ, or online doc anywhere? Please help me start walking my path. Otherwise, I'll just start looking through code and coming up with my own explanations for why things are how they are. Help would be appreciated, though.
