- Translation statuses; we could probably insert the Git hash in place
of the SVN revision number, that doesn't show how out-of-date the file
is though. Is there some other convenient way to replace the usage of
EN-Revision values, with Git? How do translators use this, if at all?
Do you?
This would require rewritting whole system. The fact that revision ID's are numbers is key in translation process (as far as I know). Currently comparing revision numbers is the way to determine if translation is up to date. All translated files are required to have comment like this:
<!-- EN-Revision: [number] Maintainer: [username] Status: ready -->
When EN-Revision ID is lower then original's one, we know that file needs to be updated as English version has been changed. When IDs are equal, it means that translation is up to date and it contain the same informations (but in different language of course).
All translators use this property because currently it's the only way to get tools like doc.php.net work.
Having git hashes instead of numerical values it's almost impossible. We would have to store full list of commits somewhere, sort it by date and then compare to check whether translation is up to date or not. So not - it doesn't have make sense at all IMO. These IDs have to be numbers.
I don't have big experience in translating documentation, so please, correct me if I'm wrong.
In general I fully agree that moving to git is great idea, but we have to find solution of this problem *before* migration.
To be frank, I'd rather have the documentation sources on Git now even
if there are things that might be temporarily broken (that's probably
good motivation to fix small issues), than sit back on our laurels,
tootling along with SVN.
Agree. I don't know many tools thoroughly but I can say something about doc.php.net as I'm mantaining it currently. As far as I can see there are not many things to change - most of all one cron script which is currently checking out SVN files. All further operations are done with copy of these files.
