We've implemented Hibernate on the backend with a SOAP interface. For our needs and the kinds
and size of objects(<10KB) that we're using SOAP overhead is very low (less than 1ms). This
is when the PHP SOAP client and Java SOAP server are on the same machine, surprising i know.
We're using SUN's JWSDP, but Apache-Axis would also work fine. My Java developer
love's hibernate. Here's the architecture, may be overkill for you.

JWSDP (SOAP server)

PHP5 (SOAP clients)

XML (Created using PHP5 or just the SOAP envelope for performance)
