Hibernate seems to be much better then any PHP O/R solution.
I've read about metastorage, propel, pear's implementation.
They are interesting, but Hibernate look like a more convinient tool.
I'll try to use propel.

We've implemented Hibernate on the backend with a SOAP interface. For our needs and the kinds and size of objects(<10KB) that we're using SOAP overhead is very low (less than 1ms). This is when the PHP SOAP client and Java SOAP server are on the same machine, surprising i know. We're using SUN's JWSDP, but Apache-Axis would also work fine. My Java developer love's hibernate. Here's the architecture, may be overkill for you. Database(MySQL) | Hibernate | JWSDP (SOAP server) | PHP5 (SOAP clients) | XML (Created using PHP5 or just the SOAP envelope for performance) | XSLT | XHTML
