From the perspective of a guy who knows PHP a lot better than Perl, I
think PHP is fine for this task. I use PHP for cron stuff all the time,
and for a simple case where you are looking for a file or a timestamp on a
file, that shouldn't even be noticeable from a memory/cpu standpoint,
unless I'm mistaken. Just my two cents. Since I've been using PHP for
such routine tasks, my Perl and Unix Shell books have collected a lot of
dust and I've seen a lot more of my wife and kids. ;-)
