Hi Dieter,
Please see my short article "Creating Auto-incrementing ID Fields with
PHP/Oracle" at http://www.weberdev.com.
It is in the 'Articles & Tutorials' section in the 'Oracle' category.
There was a link to it on the right hand side of the front page last time I
looked.
The article will tell you how to make auto-incrementing ID-fields. This is
a wild guess, but if you use this technique you might not need to get the
previously inserted ID :)
But if you do, then you could get it with the following query (using the
example sequence in the article):
select seq_emp_id.currval from dual;
