Are you running on Windows? Windows, in my opinion, is slower than on unix. I run Apache/MySQL/PHP on my WindowsXP 1ghz 256meg Toshiba laptop and when accessing my scripts I use http://localhost. The scripts can take more than 10 times longer when accessing the MySQL database. This is not to say that everybodies scripts would be this slow on a windows machine.
