Hello David,

According to PHP Classes site, over 2.200 (real) individual users
downloaded Metabase, not that all of them use it. :-)

Well, I believe that most PHP users use only one database and don't care
much about writing database independent sites. Actually, it seems most
users use MySQL because it has been free for a long time, most articles and
books only provide PHP database programming examples about MySQL and even
PHP core developers are big fans of MySQL.
Of course MySQL is not the only and not necessarily the best database for
PHP development, but it seems that for most people MySQL is the only
obvious choice for PHP programming so they think don't need to develop
applications that work with other databases.
Soon or later some realize that they may need switch databases, for
instance to overcome MySQL limitations or to make their applications run
with more than one database, but it seems those are not as much as you
could imagine.
