So what's the difference between
if (!(($blah == blah) OR ($ab == ab))) {
and
if ((!$blah == blah) OR (!$ab == ab)) {
Shouldn't they both do the same? And if so, why didn't they in this case??

Of course not! Look at the inequality in the first statement and see what it
actually says;
if (not equal to (($blah == blah) OR ($ab == ab)))
where the next one says
if ((not equal to $blah == blah) OR (not equal to $ab == ab))
The first ! tests the entire statement where as the second statement tests
each conditional. HTH!
