Nevermind, I figured it out. Here is the ultimate problem:
A link of the type:
<a href="blah.phtml?variable=<? print($variable); ?>">
gets processed into
<a href="blah.phtml?variable=PHPSESSID=blah(with the value of $variable
appended onto the end of the session ID)">
so once PHP sees the <? it prints the Session stuff, and then whatever is in
the <? ?>
