lex not fund

Hi
I just get php 4 form the server php but when i enter the command
"./configure ..." i get this error :
checking lex output file root... ./configure: lex: command not found
configure : error: cannot find output from lex; ginving up
Can some one tell where is the bug?? What is the lex command?? How to
fix this problem?
