Actually, since the files being uploaded don't exist on the server, they
are created, hence their modification date is the date it was uploaded,
which suits my purpose.
I guess at this stage what I'm looking for is a good way to sort files
in a directory by date in order to get the one with the latest mod date.

I think you'll find that the only date associated with a unix-ish file
will
be the date last modified, not the date written to disc, so you won't be
able to do it.
