Magic quotes properly escapes all input that comes from outside PHP so that
it can be easily added to a database. This means that it changes strings
such as "\\this is a test\" to "\\\\this is a test\\". In other words, it
automatically runs addslashes() on all externally-obtained variables before
you ever see them.
As for the .htaccess file, just do something like this:
<Files /path/to/your/directory/*>
php3_magic_quotes_gpc On
</Files>
(note that the path is the server filesystem path, not the URL)
Stick the .htaccess somewhere that Apache can see it, and you're off!

Does anyone now how to use php3_magic_quotes_gpc on a directory basis
using htaccess. I am on a shared server and don't have administrative
access. To be honest, I don't even now what magis quotes are. Could use
a lesson.
