Couldn't agree more!! I've been hacking/building/refining my own template
engine since the first day I was introduced to PHP... It's quite modular,
and I don't have any limitations with it, because it's mine and I know it
inside out.
You can also license the template system to each client as your own software
module. My estimates are that it took me $XXXX to build the engine, but I
license it out at about a quarter of that each time, so by the time I
licensed it out for the 5th time, I was making profit. I won't tell you
what number I'm up to know :P
Short term hurdle (development), long term advantage.
