SMTP

I am trying to send Emails to a group of people using mail. I have it all setup correctly and works when testing it on myself. However, I have recently learnt that the server we are using needs a username and password to make mails to the outside world. Does anyone have any help about authenticating with a mail server? I have some socket experience if that's what it boils down to. Thanks --BB
