I don't have the book. I thought sendmsg() just sends binary data over a socket. How does this help you to share a file descriptor? Or would this just mean relaying the data via sockets? Andi --- Andi Gutmans <andi@zend.com> http://www.zend.com/Well, it will definitely be slower since Apache will have to do file descriptor passing between processes to hand the request off to the correct httpd process. But, it will also be more secure than safe-mode and much faster than CGI-suExecHow can one pass file descriptors? Or do you just mean it will pass filename? No, I meant what I wrote. See R. Stevens' UNP and TCP/IP Illustrated for details On Linux the best way to do it is through sendmsg()/recvmsg() and on Windows I think you would use DuplicateHandle(). Not too many things use fd passing because it tends to be a pain to make portable. Some things I have run into that does use it is fhttpd, pty, and Gnome.
