Is anyone else trying to use the combination of PHP4 + mod_auth_mysql? I'm having some problems with this. Here's the basic story. I grabbed the PHP4.0.1pl2 tarball and ran the following ./configure line: ./configure --with-mysql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.12 [other stuff...] The configure process worked fine, but at the very end it displayed the following warning: +--------------------------------------------------------------------+
                       *** WARNING ***

You chose to compile PHP with the built-in MySQL support. If you
are compiling a server module, and intend to use other server
modules that also use MySQL (e.g, mod_auth_mysql, PHP 3.0,
mod_perl) you must NOT rely on PHP's built-in MySQL support, and
instead build it with your local MySQL support files, by adding
--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql to your configure line.
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+ Now, here's my problem. MySQL is not running on this server. That is, I have two different servers: a mysql server and a web server. I am trying to build PHP4 and mod_auth_mysql on the web server, but they will connect to the mysql server when they need to use databases. So simply changing the configure line to --with-mysql=/some/path/ isn't really an option for me, since the path to mysql is not on the same physical machine. I have thought about using NFS to mount the mysql server's disk on the web server's filesystem, but I don't really want to use NFS and I'd like to try to avoid this if at all possible. Does anyone have any other suggestions? The only other thing I can think of is to install a 'dummy' installation of MySQL on the web server, which never gets used for anything except to share the libs with PHP4. This is aesthetically displeasing (extra software installed on the web server for no good reason), but it's not hard. Is there a cleaner solution? -mike
