encryption decryption without mcrypt?

I'm using php on a shared server and have no control over the
configuration. It does not seem to support mcrypt. Is there any other
easy way to encrypt and decrypt a string with php? I want encrypt a
string, pass it to another page in the URL and have that page decrypt
it.
