Resolving characters

I know this is a real newbie question, but I can't find the answer to it anywhere.
Do any of you guys know how to prevent php4 from resolving ' into "? I'm attempting to implement a tiny bit of Java within some PHP echoes, and it I can't figure out how to properly resolve the ' within the java code.
