This is the query
$query =
"update toto set
OBSERVATION='$OBSERVATION' where id =$number";
and the data field OBSERVATION is declared in my Sybase Database in a long varchar.
The configuration of my php3.ini is

magic_quotes_gpc = Off ; magic quotes for incoming GET/POST/Cookie data
