Hi, > I am designing a model under Linux/PHP with MySQL at the moment for a > internship. But I'd like to ask you about other open source databases like > PostGreSQL and mSQL: > > - which one is the more ANSI SQL 92 compliant? and ODBC SQL compliant? For > example, I'd like to make subqueries like "SELECT * FROM table1 WHERE SELECT * > FROM table2" which is currently not implemented in MySQL and quite annoying. To be honest, lets not talk in terms of SQL92 compliance, in the end, both mSQL and Postgres do it adequately. As for MySQL you would have found ti doesn't even try hard. MySQL is an extremely fast database, but I wouldn't put important data anywhere near it, simply because the ACID properties aren't supported. I once wrote a paper on a method of supporting ACID external to MySQL which went for 4 pages :( Postgres is awesome, simply stunning. It has some bugs, but for its non existent price it blows my socks off, there is simply no obviously useful database thing it can't do (except directly insert large tuples). I wouldn't bother with mSQL unless you want to pay and are willing to screw around with Unix ODBC drivers (unless of course your running windows PHP). > - do the other databases support CHARSET ? Hmmm, never heard of this type. Postgres supports something like 40 different types, and the rest you can define yourself. Shaun
