I'm using Suse 6.4 too, it's a great distro :-)
First use ./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs
When you make install, the lines added to httpd.conf are added
in an <If Define> section which prevents php from loading. remove
the PHP lines outside of the <if define> save the file and restart
apache.
