I'm pretty sure it's the tables. I used to have a site structured in that way and it was slow like that, too. The trouble is that the length of the table is not known, so it doesn't try to lay it out until all of the table (including </table>) is there. Since the entire page is a table, it's slow for this reason. On sites with smaller tables, even if there are lots of them, it's not as obvious.
