What about 'flush()'?
maybe something like:
$flush_after = 20; // flush output after this many rows
$counter = 0;
while ($a = mysql_fetch_array ($big_result)) {
$counter++
if (!($counter%$flush_after)) {
flush();
}
// print the stuff
print "$a[field1] $a[field2]<BR>";
}
// note: This won't help in netscape if you're outputting all content into a table
