I could be wrong, and often am, but I think either Oracle, Sybase, or
PostgreSQL, and probably even MySQL will cheerfully search an indexed
char(30) field for names in 8-10 million records without being
inordinantly slow.
Try a test case with PostgreSQL (free) and 10 million records randomly
generated...
Just be sure that you have an index on that field, and that it's not
varchar or text: A static number of characters is faster.
You'll need buttloads of disk space for the database tables and their
index, obviously.
