If there's any way to re-code the processing done by PHP3 into SQL, do it.
PHP3 does not do long loops well at all.
If you can upgrade, PHP4 will ameliorate this (the long loops in PHP, not
the SQL), but SQL solution will probably still win.
Look into creating SQL functions or stored procedures or whatever they are
called in your database software.
