php 4.0.2 problem with GD

i got problem while make php4.0.2 with GD support this is bug?
this what i was done,
downgrade my gdlib from 1.7 to 1.2,
reading the faq :) errr still got error :)
error on gdttf.c line 79 till 836 ( very long error )
i use SuSE 6.4 with kernel 2.2.16,
i got SUCCESS while configure it with
./configure --with-apache=../apache1.3.12 --with-mysql --with-gd
if i do this
./configure --with-apache=../apache1.3.12 --with-mysql --with-gd=/location_of_my_libgd.a(.so)
they cant find libdg.a(.so)
any suggestion?
now i make/run it --without-gd
