The configure line is:
./configure --with-apache=../httpd --with-pgsql=/usr/local/pg
--enable-track-vars --with-gd
But the libpng.(a|so) don't seem to be on the system anywhere.

Well libpng.(a|so) is not part of GD lib and is a separate issue. Read
the
chapter "Image functions". Then tell us:
1) Your ./configure line
2) Where libpng.a or libpng.so is located on your system
