Oops - the first URL was incorrect:

$fp = @fopen("http://www.google.com/search?q=metallica","r");
if ($fp)
{ print"The file exists!"; }
else
{ print"The file does not exist"; }
------------------------
This *still* outputs "The file does not exist".
I'm going to try the code on another machine with a different PHP version.
