Anyone know a source of figures for what percentage of users have javascript
disabled? I can't imagine it can be more than a couple of percent if that.

No. If javascript is enabled then the Alexandru's script will work.
That is /if javascript is enabled/. For security reasons users may opt
to turn it off -- which means that the script won't work for some users.
So, you might need to write a javascript to make sure javascript was
enabled, and if it wasn't throw up a page with buttons instead of links.
