There is a nasty that we encountered with session variables. If a
variable is used before it is registered it is possible to "corrupt"
the php environment. In the cases where we have see this to be a
problem we are seeing MySQL connection failures that are eliminated
when session variables are registered before they are used. I use the
term corrupt here as a hand waving gesture because I don't really
understand what is going on under the hood.
