stopping a part of web page from being refreshed

just wondering where i can find out how to stop content on a web page from
being updated when a webpage is refreshed with a refresh button or using f5
to reload? i have a hit counter that i dont want to update on reloads but
only on original page hits..
was just thinging either i could use javascript onreload or onload or use
the referrer var (forgot what it was)...
if anybody has any ideas let me know
