Thanks, all, for your suggestions.
It looks like it was a "syntax error" (did I mention I was a newbee?).
I changed this
header("Location: contact_detail.php?pk_user_id=' . $pk_user_id . '");
to this
header("Location: contact_detail.php?pk_user_id=$pk_user_id");
and now it works!
