SSL problems.

I have php 4.3.1 installed on an openBSD box.
This is the source code of my ssl test:

#error_reporting(0);
$handle = fopen('https://www.e-gold.com','r') or
die('couldnt open
https');
print(fread($handle,9999999));
fclose($handle);
?>
With this simple code i get an error saying this:
Warning: fread() [function.fread]: SSL: fatal protocol error in
/var/www/htdocs/test.php on line 5
If i turn off error_reporting the script works great, but somehow with ssl
connections i always get an error.
Anyone has any kind of info on what could be causing this error?
