If people are questioning your recommendation already, maybe they won't
support other recommendations you make - this should be an early warning
sign of trouble ahead.
detroitmusic.com is a very simple *entertainment* site using PHP - but
what do you really mean by 'entertainment'? Music? Movies? Books? My
entertainment is different from yours, I bet.
For every PHP site on any topic, someone can point to an ASP or Java or
CF site that most likely has more name recognition or history or pageviews
or features
or whatever. Basing this decision strictly on what everyone else is using
rather than assessing the project's (1) needs (2) budget and (3) staff
skill set is setting the project up to fail.
